Montmorency Falls

Experience the thrill of standing above the tallest waterfall in the Québec province. Visit in winter to see it frozen over.

Watch the Montmorency River drop 83 metres (272 feet) to join the St. Lawrence River in a bowl-like basin below. With a maximum height nearly 30 metres (100 feet) taller than Niagara Falls, Montmorency Falls are one of Québec’s natural wonders. Learn about the local ecosystems at the interpretation centre and watch the falls from a restaurant and café perched on its edge.

Traverse the suspension bridge that hangs above the falls to take breathtaking photos of the spray rising from the river. There are many ways to see Montmorency Falls, including riding the cable car that moves between the base of the falls and the cliff top. Purchase a one-way ticket and enjoy the walk down.

A long set of stairs snake up the mountainside leading to a great vantage point. While the stairs are challenging, especially in winter when ice makes them slippery, there are many spots to rest and catch your breath and look out across the falls.

Visit in winter to see Montmorency Falls transform into a mountain of ice. As the temperatures drop you’ll see the water cease to flow and the mist freeze into strange shapes. If you’re feeling adventurous, sign up on the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency website to climb the frozen waterfall. This is only recommended for experienced climbers.

Located within Parc de la Chute-Montmorency, a visit to the falls can be coupled with a day of hiking, cycling or bird watching along the many trails in the park.

To reach Montmorency Falls catch the bus or drive approximately 13 kilometres (8 miles) east of Québec City until you see the well signposted highway exit for Parc de la Chute-Montmorency. The park and waterfall are open daily. There is no fee for admission, but there is a fee to park your car here.
